NEWBURGH — The last time 845 Sports Rewind saw Newburgh Free Academy, the Goldbacks were working through a preseason game against Christian Brothers Academy. Friday night at Newburgh, they looked like a completely different team.
Newburgh shut out Cornwall 31-0 on a comfortable evening that turned over into one of the better sunsets of the season, handing the Goldbacks their third straight win.
Quarterback Jaiseon Barnwell was nearly perfect. He completed 7 of 8 passes for 205 yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball to three different receivers and adding four carries on the ground.
Justin Lassic did damage both ways, running 19 times for 72 yards and catching two passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. Nyeir Johnson carried 11 times for 66 yards and caught three passes for 50 yards and two scores, and Jeron Underwood hauled in two catches for 40 yards and a touchdown. Austin Lilla added 10 yards on three carries and Denvyr Herring picked up five.
The defense was every bit as good. Newburgh kept Cornwall off the board entirely and got to the quarterback all night. Chris Mack finished with six tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks, and Johnson matched him with two sacks of his own to go with six tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Tavio Johnson added a sack and a fumble recovery.
James Lilla led the team with 10 tackles and forced a fumble. Austin Lilla had eight tackles and a tackle for loss, Justin Hines, Kasai Armwood and Robert Hannigan Hayes had four apiece, and Corey Tillman added four tackles and a forced fumble. Tyrone Sutton had three tackles and recovered a fumble, and Austin Van Dalinda chipped in three stops.
The night doubled as Youth Night for the Newburgh school district, which welcomed Goldback Youth Football and Cheerleading athletes of all levels onto the field.
Newburgh improves to 3-1 and hosts Monroe-Woodbury on Friday at 6 p.m. Cornwall falls to 1-3 and visits Minisink Valley on Friday at 7 p.m.
