CORNWALL — Two goals decided this one. Almost nothing else did.
Lourdes beat Cornwall 2-0 on Saturday afternoon under a clear October sky, a scoreline that reads a good deal more comfortable than the match that produced it. The two sides went at each other end to end from the opening whistle, and what finally separated them was which team’s chances went in.
Emmanuel Macenat scored one. Grady Collins scored the other. Aaron Mars supplied the assist.
Nearly everything else, the goalkeepers took care of. Cornwall’s Lucas Santiago made five saves. Lourdes’ Chase Piotrowski made five of his own.
That symmetry is the whole afternoon in one line. Both teams got there. Both goalkeepers said no, over and over. One team finished twice, and that was the margin.
It was the sort of day that makes the fall worth turning out for — full sun, color coming into the trees past the fence line, and two teams treating a Saturday in October like it counted for considerably more than that.
Neither side gets much time to sit with it. Cornwall is back on its own field Monday, hosting Rye at 4 p.m. Lourdes is home Tuesday for Red Hook at 4:15, then travels to Mount Academy on Thursday. Cornwall follows with Goshen at home on Oct. 20 and a trip to Middletown on Oct. 22.
After that comes the part everyone was already thinking about on the walk back to the parking lot. Sectionals are close. On the evidence of Saturday, neither of these teams is going to be anybody’s comfortable draw.
