WASHINGTONVILLE — One goal. That was the margin, and for long stretches it did not feel like enough.
Cornwall beat Washingtonville 1–0 on Wednesday to reach the Section 9 championship game, winning a semifinal that could have gone either way and spending a good part of it defending.
Samantha Mastowski, Cornwall’s No. 16, scored early in the first half. It was the only goal either side would get.
From there it became a holding job. Washingtonville had the better of the possession and kept coming, and Cornwall’s answer was to defend as a group and trust its goalkeeper. Courtney Karbiner was outstanding in net. The back line in front of her did not break.
That is the honest shape of the day. Washingtonville played extremely well and made Cornwall earn every minute of this one. Cornwall earned it.
Warwick is next, Saturday, Oct. 31 at 9 a.m. in Wallkill, with a section championship on the line.
