Cornwall rolls past Monroe-Woodbury, 49–7, for first win of the season
Sage Caesar accounts for four touchdowns and the Dragons’ defense scores one of its own as Cornwall answers an 0-2 start with a rout at Monroe-Woodbury.
MONROE-WOODBURY — The pressure was on Cornwall coming into Friday night. After opening the season with two straight losses, the Dragons needed a response — and they delivered one, rolling past Monroe-Woodbury 49-7 on a beautiful, clear night at Monroe-Woodbury.
Cornwall’s defense set the tone early. Quadir Truluck got to the quarterback for a sack in the opening stretch, and Zion Felix added a sack of his own as the Dragons kept the Crusaders’ offense out of rhythm all night.
The secondary got in on the action, too. Colin Greene picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown, and Lekeaka Fonkem came up with a second pick for the Cornwall defense.
On offense, quarterback Sage Caesar accounted for four touchdowns. He connected with Jayon Robinson and Gabe Colsant on deep scoring passes and ran for two more himself. Michael Cooper and Derek Scott each added a rushing touchdown as Cornwall built a 21-0 halftime lead and kept pulling away after the break.
Monroe-Woodbury has been fighting through a series of injuries, including the loss of starting quarterback Ethan Maldonado to an arm injury. The Crusaders fall to 0-3, while Cornwall picks up its first win of the season and moves to 1-2.
Both teams are back on the road Friday. Cornwall visits Newburgh Free Academy at 6 p.m., and Monroe-Woodbury travels to Minisink Valley for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
